What to See and Do in Riomaggiore

Riomaggiore: the best places to stay and attractions of the Cinque Terre.

Riomaggiore is the first village of Cinque Terre. It takes only 7 minutes to reach here by train from La Spezia. By car, it's about half an hour, and parking can be found here only in the winter.

Riomaggiore is just 800 m away from the next village, Manarola. They are connected by the Lover's Path, the most famous trail in all of Cinque Terre. For more details about the trails and their availability, read on the “Trails: Map and Status” page. A leisurely stroll through Riomaggiore will take about two hours, more if you want to relax on the beach or in a bar.

At the end of the page, you'll find a map with marked key locations that will come in handy!

We recommend visiting the village no earlier than 11 in the morning, as the most beautiful part of the town will be in the shade due to the mountain blocking the morning sun. Once you exit the train station, you have two ways to get to the town center. We recommend taking a circular route: go through the tunnel to reach the center and return via the hill. An example of such a route is shown on the map at the end of the page.

After passing through the tunnel, you'll reach the town's central street, where you'll find the Santa Maria Assunta Church. Before strolling along this street, descend through the adjacent tunnel to the harbor, the panoramic view of this bay is the most famous spot in Riomaggiore.

Upon returning to the central street, be sure to stop at one of the many restaurants. If you enjoy seafood, this is a well-known fishing village! Then, climb one of the narrow streets up the hill, where you can see the Church of St. John the Baptist and the Riomaggiore Castle. There are far fewer people here. After resting at the top of the hill near the castle, you can continue to the train station as indicated on the map, allowing you to see most of the village. This walk will take about 2 hours.
